How a pine fights back

Illustration of pine resin helping resist beetles and drought stress weakening defenses

Resin can help repel attacking beetles. Drought stress can weaken natural defenses. Watering supports tree health but cannot cure a successfully attacked tree.

Warning signs

Look for pitch tubes, reddish boring dust, small holes, woodpecker activity and fading needles. Symptoms vary; a green crown does not rule out a recent attack.

What you can do

Photograph suspect trees. Water appropriately in dry periods when soil is unfrozen. Avoid moving potentially infested firewood. Seek an assessment before choosing treatments or removal.
